2010-02-05:
Distance today: 37.0 km (Accumulated: 20353.0 km
Elapsed time: 03:30:47

Start 08:35am at white sign "Kinderton Farm, Langdon Estates", on the N2 hwy. to Cape Town, ca.55km N of East London. 21c, few cl. and l. wind. Finish 12:55pm at "N2-16, 30,0" on the N2 hwy. to Cape Town, ca.20km N of East London. 28c and same.

Finally getting back towards normal stage lengths again :-)
After the run through the last part of the green and very hilly Transkei area I was accomodated at Richard and his whifesfarm out in the rural areas w. a fantastic view over the deep valleys below the farm - the same valleys & mountainpasses wich I had struggled my way up through yesterday by good help of Kwenga who now has returned to his home in the Transkei, and Richards whife has kindly taken over as my next support-crew !

.. Amazing helpfullness here in South Africa !!

Nb: On todays stage there probably is a little interuption, a few hundred meters, in the live-gps transmission of the run to the website. (I had to change batteries & couldnt get the gps-sys. to resume the tracking right away). I expect that it willbe 2-3 days before I have fully implemented SportsTracker as the present way of live-documenting each step of the run - and these types of technologies often requires a bit of getting used to. So please bear with that there might be smaller interruptions next couple of days :-)

2010-02-04:

Elapsed time: 01:46:37

Start 08:55am at blue rd.sign "N2-17, 3" on the N2 hwy. to Cape Town, ca.70km N of East London. 25c, half o.c. and l. wind. Finish 11:23am at white sign "Kinderton Farm, Langdon Estates", on the N2 hwy. to Cape Town, ca.55km N of East London. 24c, o.c. and same.

A hero webmaster :-)

After several days having big problems with the live-gps system, wich usually sends pic. & gpsdata live to you on worldrun.org, my webmaster has found a solution to the problem. If it works it certainly wont be the first time he solves the tecnical obstacles - both in wr1 & wr2 :-)

...You can see the pic. from todays mountain-stage at "gallery" in the menu. Tomorrow we should have gps-tracking back online via SportsTracker wich I experimented a bit with during the last kms today.

THANKS to Kasper it appears to put the documentation back online :-)

If it all works tomorrow I'll aim at beeing back to the usual daily distances, ca. 40km, again. The last few days has been very short stages as I dont like to do running which isnt properly documented. If at all possible the documentation should be made public and the latest tracking technology used :-) And we seem to be at that point again after afew days 'hickup' !

... The reason for this concearn w. proper documentation is that extreme ultraruns like this are in their nature difficult to proove (and over the years unfortunately there has been a few attempts to 'cut corners'), so to take it seriously - the documentation needs to be in place !

2010-02-03:
Distance today: 26.0 km (Accumulated: 20299.0 km)
Elapsed time: 02:28:41

Start 08:45am at blue rd.sign "N2-17, 29" on the N2 hwy. to Cape Town, ca. 95km N. East London. 21c, clear and no wind. Finish 11:27am at blue rd.sign "N2-17, 3" on the N2 hwy. to Cape Town, ca. 70km N. East London. 29c and same.

Problems, again !

While the run went well on todays very hilly run, entering the "Kai Cuttings" steep valley section - then instead of getting the live gps system working fully again; it stopped working also on my backup phone :-(

So documentation is at present not online, but done w. video cam., photo, log. & wittness. I really hope to Quicklysolve this !! There seems to be no end to the problems at present !

Positive was a good interview done with Runners World, South Africa, last week :-)

Another short stage setteling into the run again after the treatment of the arm.

Setting up base in Butterworth city in the Transkei - a place I enjoy depite beeing apparently the onlynot black-african in the city; the Transkei comes w. strong warnings of high/violent crime. But I have to say that when I took a quiet stroll after the run I only met smiles and helpfullness :-)

A less good detail is that I still cant get the live gps-system to work !!! Hope to get it working soon !

Back running :-)
Although it was just a short stage of 20km today to make sure to ease back into the run and check everything was ok - it was still such a joy !

.. There is always a moment of doubt,a feeling deep in the stomack; when beeing on the road of the world runs and returning after a forced break. It was there when returning to remote areasin southern Tanzania to resume the run after an operation on the arm up in Dar Es Salaam. And it was there again this morning when Debbie from East Londow/Mthatha took me the 200km back to the start & meet w. my Transkei support-driver Kwenga, after 6 days of deep rest.

A Huge relief as the legs, spirit and not least joy of running is still there.

And much appreciation of the support I have had from friends and sponsors :-))

At the moment I still think that in the overall picture it will do the body good to rest proper after hopefully reaching Cape Town. Running the 20 000km has not been easy on body and soul, especially East Africa wich has been far more difficult than even running across Siberia in world run 1.
To my very pleasant surprise my main sponsor, Ecco, has opened a possibility that it may be an option to take on South and North America once I have had a long recover period to make sure its safe to continue.

But before such possibilities I would amongst other things be sure to take a good rest in Australia - thanking two people who has made a huge positive impact in getting me towards beeing the first person to run straight through Africa. And w. sponsors help perhaps later further :-)

Restday 6 of 6, healing the infection in right arm.

I have now spend 6 days near East London in South Africa waiting for the right arm to be ok again after yet another severe swelling & infection (first time was in Tanzania and later again while running in Mozambique).
I recieved excellent help & medical treatment by dr. Watson (!) in East London and I should be ready to continue the run tomorrow; starting where I left theroute last monday and running towards Cape Town, ca. 1200km away.

I was very lucky to kindly recieve free medical treatment by the doctor who gave himself good time to take care of the infection. Much Appreciated !! :-)

Also Grand help from Tony & family in E. London who took care of all formalities and logistics for me !!

However during the quiet restdays I begin to realize that there is a high probability that the run ends in Cape Town. The body & mind have been very worn down by the 10 000km long streatch of running straight through Africa in conditions we simply dont know of (luckily !) in the western contries. Even when preparing seriously & detailed for two years its not possible to imagine or prepare for the amount of monthly deceases to endure or the effects of lack of proper food, water shortages and 30 to 53c heat during 11months. All factors wich drains the body of energy to an extend I have never experiensed before.

In all reality its ofcourse lucky to have been able to run this far - and if reaching Cape Town becoming the first person to complete a run through Africa as well as to run from Europe to Africa etc.

But still its very difficult to make peace with, if I stop in Cape Town. As a runner you set out to complete what you start; and Cape Town is only half way of what I set out to do. And not least I find it difficult to let down all the fantastic people who has helped me on my run through their fascinating, strange & beautifull contries !! As well as the sponsors who has put in an equal effort to help me proceed running forward.

So we will see once in Cape Town in approximately 1 1/2 month. But I do know that the body is tellingme stop while its still good & in one piece - and despite the many things I have put it through over the years (100kms, 24hs, 6day races and the first world run..), its always been a point to listen to and respect the body. And that is a principle Id like to hold on to, instead of beeing forced to stop by breaking or injuring the body, so one way or the other I have 1200km to make my peace w. a decition :-)

Nb: The LifePilot system seems to also haveits problems. At present we are working on it and hopefully I should atleast be able to send pictures live to the website. If not sooner then when I reach Port Elisabeth in 2 weeks I should be able to repair the hardware problem and thus again also transmit the gps position live to the website. Sorry !!
