Start 09:45am. at yellow house "Maungu Slaughter House", 124km W. of Mombassa, on the main road to Mombassa. 21c, half cl. and l. wind. Finish 14:44pm. At blue sign "K.A.R.I. Range Research Sub. Centre, Buchuma", 94km W. of Mombassa, on the main road to Mombassa. 30c, a few clouds and same.

.. Safari Camp !

We wanted to put up our tents and set camp a little bit outside Tsavo Nat. Park itself, at what turned out to be a small wildlife park; the Discovery park.

After getting about 1km away from roadside, into the low tree/bush landscape, and preparing to find a good sheltered spot for the tents on the red dusty soil, Tommy noticed some huge droppings wich more or less could only be from elephants. A few large bones also lay under a three.
We decided to have a closer look to see if it was safe and silently walked away from the car under the low bushes. 50meter we got before we heard a deep low 'growl' - we turned and immideately headed for the car, trying not to panic & run ;-)
(I've only heard that sound through the tv before, when watching nature doc. from areas w. tigers).

We didnt need to discuss much to agree to put the camp elsewhere.. And ended up in a circle build ofthornbranches w. the two tents and the car in the middle !

- it is safe to say that todays camping was a fair bit more dramatic than the running.. :-)
